3 Types of Monsoon Storm Damage

Monsoon season is upon us here in Arizona, which means storm damage claims associated with heavy winds and rains will soon be on the rise. 1. High Winds

The winds associated with monsoon season are no joking matter and should be taken seriously. Powerful thunderstorms create downbursts of wind, commonly referred to as microbursts. Many of these gusts can exceed 100 mph, causing significant damage and kicking up debris. These high winds are responsible for ripping roofs off of houses and structures, uprooting trees, and blowing out windows. They can also damage outdoor awnings, siding, and mobile home skirting. If a downburst is approaching, take shelter indoors and stay away from doors and windows that are not secure.

2. Downpours & Flash Flooding

Unfortunately, flash flooding is the number one reason for thunderstorm-related vehicle deaths. When the sky opens up and releases all of the water at once, the result is heavy downpours that can release feet of rain in a matter of minutes. The result is flooded rivers, streams, and city drainage systems that make roadways impassible and flood front yards. The downpours can also be heavy enough to tear off awnings and canvas coverings over backyard patios. If you can, lower your patio covering before a downpour occurs to help protect the canvas. 3. Extreme Heat & Fires

Arizona is known for its extreme heat and temperatures, especially during monsoon season. While many people associate the strong thunderstorms with this change of season, heat also plays a factor. Heat is the number-one, weather-related killer in the United States. Coupled with the extreme heat are wildfires. When lightning from a storm hits a dead palm branch, the fire quickly grows and can spread to surrounding structures and trees. It’s also not uncommon for overgrown trees to catch fire when they encounter electrical lines. Protect your home by keeping brush away from powerlines and, if you can spray your yard to keep grass blades and wood structures moist.
